English Bulldogs Background Information

English bulldog is a fighter dog initially bred in England to bait bulls. In 1835, this questionable entertainment was outlawed and the interest to this breed consequently abated. However individual breeders carried on with breeding English bulldogs that by now changed to the extent that nowadays it’s really hard to imagine that their ancestors had really to fight the fierce beasts.

The forefathers of the present English bulldogs used to be courageous fearless dogs with a strong and compact body, salient muscles and huge mandibles. They were bred to bait and hunt, a bloody “sport” the bottom-line of which was to attack the tethered bull and get at his muzzle. The ancient engravings feature bulldogs that are completely different by their built from their descendents.

It must be noted that bulldog must be grateful to such a fighting selection for having acquired a whole set of advantages! This is a very valiant dog and its valiance should not be mistaken for aggressiveness. Quite on the contrary the genuine valiance is to be able of cool-bloodedly appraising the menace and reacting correspondingly. The English bulldog has a very high temper threshold and is almost impossible to rattle which makes it an unusually agreeable companion. The modern English bulldog is a powerful short-haired dog with gladiatorial outlook that possesses though short thick feet and the touching "pig-like" tail. Male dogs weigh 25 kilograms, females are lighter, their chest is large, the head is bulky and broad, the muzzle is very short, wide and upturned with thick (chewy) lips.

The modern English bulldog suffers of hard breathing and consequently is not capable of lengthy and tenuous work, does not stand extended and rapid passages or playing in hot weather; it would usually snore while sleeping. The dog is very fond of children and condones any of their antics.
